Help users explore Rotterdam, so they visit museums more often.

The museum Boijmans van Beuningen was going to be renovated, and wanted to stay relevant during this renovation. My team and I created the concept of BaRoK. Users have to find artworks throughout the city of Rotterdam and will discover hotspots.

Role

Solo UX Researcher / conceptor

Duration

2 months

The Problem

Museum van Boijmans will be unable to receive physical visitors during the renovation but wants to stay relevant in a new (digital) space.

I quickly realized I had to take the role of conceptor and showcase the value of concept development.

Design Process

Goals

An important business goal is attracting a new target group: the cosmopolitan was chosen. This group of people loves exploring new things (Wanderlust). A big focus point of this project. A project goal is learning about cosmopolitan values and relevant trends. This can be used to facilitate touchpoints which the users will interact with.

BaRoK

BaRoK is a platform that would be available on multiple devices. Users can scan QR codes on artworks (hidden) throughout the city. BaRoK can be used to find and scan paintings. These artworks will guide users toward (hidden) hotspots, responding to the users' want to explore.

Results

The result is a new way for Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum to stay relevant during renovation; they can also implement BaRoK in the long term to keep attracting these cosmopolites. The Boijmans Van Beuningen experience has now stretched out of the physical space; this could lead to potential new visitors to the museum after the renovation.
